One of the main queries we get from poker players is regards to staking, what is it, how does it work and how can I get involved?
The main way poker players make money is by taking part in large online poker tournaments which have a large field but big prize pools for the winners as well.
Some of these can have a large buy-in to enter which goes towards the prize pool, and that is where staking comes in.
Instead of a player paying the entry fee and buy-in themselves, they get other people to buy a ‘stake’ in their entry. This, in return, gets those players a ‘stake’ in any winnings.
For example, for a tournament with a buy-in of 10,000 Rupees, a player can sell a 50% stake in return for 50% of winnings. If someone pays them 5,000 Rupees to help them enter, that person will be entitled to 50% of any prize the player wins.
This is especially popular when it comes to mega money tournaments such as the World Series of Poker, where some tournaments can cost €10,000 to enter but have prize pools of €500k or more – life changing amounts for both the player and anyone that stakes them.
Not every player will be good enough for staking as only around 10% of a field in a poker tournament gets paid on average, and only the final few players get paid a decent profit.
But for those players who run deep on some occasions but don’t want all the risk of buying into high value tournaments, staking can be a great alternative.
